One By One

Ketchup

The default at the counter and the only one you will find in a pump dispenser in the dining room rather than a cup. Best ordered with: nuggets, fries, anything.

Barbecue

The most ordered nugget sauce at most restaurants, and the safest choice for a child who has not tried the others. Best ordered with: nuggets, tenders.

Honey Mustard

Mild enough to work for anyone who finds Barbecue too sweet. It doubles as a salad dressing in a pinch. Best ordered with: nuggets, tenders, salads.

Ranch

The cooling option, which is why it is the one to ask for alongside anything spicy. Best ordered with: nuggets, tenders, fries.

Sweet and Sour

The thinnest of the set, closer to a glaze than a dip, and the one most often out of stock. Best ordered with: nuggets.

Buffalo

S'Awesome

Wendy's own house sauce and the one that divides opinion most. It works better on fries than on nuggets. Best ordered with: nuggets, fries, burgers.

The Sauces You Cannot Order in a Cup

A second group of sauces exists only inside particular builds. You will not be handed these in a dipping cup, because they are applied on the line as the item is assembled, and asking for one on the side is hit and miss depending on how the restaurant is set up.

How Many Sauces Come With Your Order

The convention at most restaurants is one cup with a 4 or 6 piece and two with a 10 piece, but this is not a corporate rule and staff apply it loosely. Ask for an extra at the counter and you will almost always get it without being charged. Where this changes is delivery: on the apps, every sauce is a separate priced line item, which is why people who only order Wendy's through delivery often believe the sauces have never been free.

If you are ordering for a group, the practical move is to ask for the sauces by name and count rather than leaving it to the default. A 10 PC. Chicken Nuggets at $5.09 shared between two people needs three or four cups, not the two it ships with.

Limited Sauces and Why They Vanish

Ghost Pepper Ranch is the one readers ask about most, and it is the clearest example of how Wendy's handles sauce. It arrives attached to a spicy promotion, stays while that promotion runs, then leaves with it. Individual restaurants keep pouring it until their stock is gone, which is why one location still has it weeks after another has run out. The same pattern applies to every seasonal sauce the chain has run.

Because of that, the only reliable check is the Wendy's app, which shows the live sauce list for a specific restaurant once you select it. Our specials page tracks what is being promoted nationally, which is usually a good indicator of which limited sauce is currently in circulation.
